About 2 weeks ago I wrote a post giving a tour of my mini grid sketchbook, a book I've been working in since March 2017. At the time of writing that post I still had 5 more pages to fill. The reason I didn't wait until after I filled the whole sketchbook to write that entry is that I wanted to save those last 5 pages for this entry. Today, I'd like to share the beginnings of a collection I've been thinking up!
Below is my mood board as well as those last 5 pages, where I've been hand drawing some of the patterns I might use.
I had a lot of fun with this mood board (I haven't been using photoshop that much lately so it was fun to play around with it again)! My idea for this collection is to design silk pocket squares and neckerchiefs with patterns inspired by geometric shapes from Roman mosaics. Added animal print texture will contrast the clean and organized nature of the geometric patterns while, in a way, mimicking the texture of a mosaic. In this mood board, I wanted to convey that idea as well as the sense of luxury I'm going for, as the goal is to digitally print these on silk.
I'm looking to design at least 3 different pocket squares/neckerchiefs so I've been drawing a bunch of different patterns in my grid sketchbook that may work! These patterns are simple in their basic shapes but made more "complicated" in their detail. In all these patterns, I've attempted to mimic the tesserae of a mosaic in some areas, leaving it out in others as to not make the pattern too busy.
The next step in the process is to scan these guys in and play with it a bit in photoshop. If I need to draw more patterns, I'll sketch some more out in my new mini sketchbook. When I'm done designing, I'll move onto sampling (which I'm also in the middle of doing for another collection, more on that later).
It was so nice to finish up this sketchbook with these patterns!
Such a great way to wrap up a book I've spent so much time in.
