A Little Tour of My High School Sketchbooks

Writer: Megan CiraoloMegan Ciraolo

Not gonna lie: I've been kinda stuck on what to write about this week. My last two blog entries were a bit longer and full of detail. But this week I think I'm gonna take it a bit easier and just show you some of my old sketches from high school. I won't write much but I will say this to start out:

High school Megan was a bit emotional, lonely, and not very confident. I drew whenever the mood struck or for art class assignments. Art was really the only thing I was sure of myself with and I even questioned that at times. I've come a long way since.

There are quite a bit of portrait sketches, landscapes, but only the occasional pattern-like sketch (it took me a while to get there). For most of the portrait sketches, I used a mirror for reference but a couple of them are from (mostly) unaware classmates, friends, and family members (I know, a bit creepy but I did usually tell them afterwards at least). Other than that, most of my focus in these were for the college admissions portfolio so there are a couple of ideas below that turned into artwork that went towards that.

Not all of them are good (in fact, I'd even go as far to say that some are quite horrible and a tad embarrassing), but nonetheless, those two sketchbooks got me through high school and into my SCAD years. They are nice keepsakes to go back to and remember how I used to think about art, and a good example of the beginnings of my passion for it.
